Both the A1GP cars and Zytek’s O4S and O6S Sportscars are equipped with the unique all-electric paddle-shift gearbox control system. This system exhibits all the advantages of other paddle-shift systems but with greatly reduced complexity and cost.
Paddle Shift
The Zytek Electrically-assisted Gearshift System (EGS) is an electro-mechanical system, specifically designed and manufactured for use in motor racing applications. The system is the first of its kind to be developed for use in motorsport and utilises the very latest CNC machinery and bespoke manufacturing processes to ensure every unit is made to the same exacting quality standards.
The EGS allows gear shifting with sequential gears by the actuation of shift paddles mounted onto the steering wheel - the right hand paddle shifts up a gear, the left shifts down - in addition to switches for selecting neutral and reverse. Both upshifts and downshifts are achieved without the need to operate the clutch, except for launch, stopping, selecting neutral and selecting first/reverse gears from neutral.
Gear Changes in Milliseconds
Using fast-acting solenoids, the EGS has the ability to effect gear changes in 25 milliseconds (about the time it takes to blink) and up to five downshifts in less than a second. The precise movement of the electric actuators considerably extends the life of the gear selector mechanism and dog rings, extending gearbox life and improving reliability and shifting accuracy.
The fully-electric approach removes the need for a separate hydraulic or pneumatic system, reducing vehicle mass and complexity. Once fitted, the system is essentially maintenance-free and there is no potential for leakage of air or hydraulic fluid and interfaces directly with both Zytek and third-party engine controllers, using either hard wiring or a CAN interface.
